*BAM* Another Superhero For A Day Is In The Books *POW*

This past Saturday, we hosted our 2nd AnnualSuperhero For A Day event in Regina. Now that we’ve had a chance to recover from all the Superhero Challenges and Activities and really take a look back at how the day came together, we have a few thoughts to share - both as organizers of this event and as members of the Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society and this amazing province of Saskatchewan.

This day truly would not have been the success that it was without the support and excitement that our Superhero friends bring. Last year, we had the pleasure of crossing paths with this amazing group of people who share our enthusiasm not only for Superheroes and cosplay, but most importantly - for bringing smiles to little faces and spreading a message of inclusion and acceptance. We were so blessed to have Regina Costume League partner with us again this year, and with them came friends from as far away as Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Kind hearted people who can get behind our message of finding the inner Superhero in every child. We can say that without a doubt, every child felt like a true Superhero thanks to the dozen+ characters who joined us on Saturday. Everyone from Superman to Darth Maul, Spiderman to Baymax, Anna & Elsa to Ironman, Rey & BB8 to Munchie the dinosaur and everything in between. An event like this wouldn’t happen without your support, input and time.THANK YOU.

We are always amazed at the willingness of local businesses, organizations and citizens to step up and get behind our cause. Maybe we should stop being surprised! The truth is, we actually live in a pretty amazing province filled with many generous and kind hearted souls who are interested in making life better for others. It’s not so much about being a charity or non-profit… or even about Down syndrome. It’s wanting to get behind the idea of making our city and province better for everyone. Without the support of the MANY, MANY sponsors and donors - whether it was corporate sponsorship, a donation of a raffle prize or silent auction item - a small non-profit like the SDSS wouldn’t have a chance to thrive. We owe each and every single donor a giant and heart-feltTHANK YOU.(For a complete list of our sponsors, and for some amazing local businesses to check out, please see below!)

This year, we changed venues and were hosted by the amazing staff at theG.Marconi Canadian Italian Club. Anna and her team not only served a phenomenal meal, but they took care of us from day one of planning. We always knew we were in good hands and we certainly were not disappointed. We can’t wait to work with them again next year!

An event like this, takes an army to put together - to our group of volunteers who donned their Superhero costumes and t-shirts, capes and masks and came out to help with everything from selling raffle tickets, to manning stations and doors, directing guests, acting as photographers and generally doing every job they were told - with a smile no less - THANK YOU. You are the glue that held our day together.

To our new friend,Alex Brown of CTV Regina- Thank you for taking the time out of your weekend to act as our MC. The energy and humour you brought to our day was infectous. You ensured our event ran smoothly and that our guests were informed, entertained and having a great time. We are so happy to have had you on board and look forward to many more adventures together.

An event like this takes a year (give or take) to really put together. This means sacrifices of time and energy that sometimes are hard to come by. Our families got behind our crazy ideas and understood that giving up Mom meant bringing happiness to many others. Thank you for your enthusiasm and support, and for getting behind these big dreams that we have!
